Late Rally by Jail Birds Secures Win
|
Fans who came to Cobras Ballpark watched the Newark Jail Birds and the West Coast Defenders fight to the finish.
The Jail Birds grabbed a win, 3-2, at Cobras Ballpark, overcoming a fine effort from West Coast pitcher John Witt. Witt went 7.1 innings and allowed 1 earned run. Newark reliever Mario Robles picked up the win, upping his record to 1-1. Tao Ru took the loss. Picking up the save was Jon Green, his 2nd.
In the bottom of the 8th, designated hitter Lewis Hoskins gave Newark the lead when he hit a 3-run home run. The Jail Birds had been trailing 2-0, but the two-out home run off West Coast pitcher Tao Ru changed that -- and Newark went on to win.
"I'm proud of the boys for pulling through," said Newark Jail Birds manager António Gómez. "The wins don't come easy for this team, but everyone's got an extra jump in their step after a game like this."
The last-place Jail Birds raised their record to 12-36.
