Rain could not dampen the pregame excitement of Newark fans at Cobras Ballpark. But the subsequent loss, and a disappointing one at that, to the Hellcats had to.
The Jacksonville Hellcats handed the Newark Jail Birds a sound defeat, 11-0, at Cobras Ballpark. Jason Donovan was a main contributor to the win. He went 2 for 3 with 2 singles and 2 walks, while scoring 2 times and driving in 2 for Jacksonville. Jacksonville reliever Jeff Hodge was the winner. His record is now 1-1. Botol Soverosa took the loss.
Yoshinaka Nishimura had a productive at-bat for the Hellcats with two out in the top of the first. With the bases loaded, the left fielder hit a bases-clearing double. The at-bat was important in the Jacksonville win.
Newark manager António Gómez called the blowout loss "just something that happens."
The Hellcats, now 1-2, have not found much traction so far in 2028.
