Swati Shines in Chiefs Win
|
The Champaign Chiefs and Des Moines Spartans completed their game despite the rain.
Benefiting from the performance of Yusuf Swati, the Champaign Chiefs defeated the Des Moines Spartans, 5-2. Swati hit 2 home runs for the Chiefs. Jin-song Cheung, the winner, improved to 2-0. He held the Spartans to 2 runs on 4 hits over 6 innings, while striking out 3 and walking 2.
Dean Pepper was 2-5 with a double. He drove in 2 runs and scored once for Champaign. With one out and the game tied in the top of the seventh, Pepper, who is tied for 4th in the KSL in home runs with 22, had a clutch at-bat. Facing Des Moines hurler Damian Xian, he hit a 2-run double to give the Chiefs a 4-2 lead.
"There are times you get yourself out and there are times you come through," Swati said. "That's how it goes."
With the win, Champaign has a record of 46-56. Des Moines falls to 57-45.
