The Des Moines Spartans did just enough to sneak past the Champaign Chiefs, 6-5, at Spartans Park. Des Moines designated hitter José Morín earned player of the game honors. Des Moines reliever Eliot Moreau was the winner. His record is now 6-3. The losing pitcher was Felipe Moreno. Donald Hoover finished the game for Des Moines and earned his 19th save.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Des Moines got a break when Morín went to the plate. With no outs, a runner on 1st and the Spartans trailing 4-2, Morín hit a 2-run home run.

"This isn't football or hockey where you can overwhelm your opponents," Morín told the Des Moines Today. "Everyone gets 27 outs and we happened to make the most of them."

Des Moines goes to 57-43, Champaign to 44-56.
