Flash Deal Chiefs 5-3 Setback
|
Fairfield withstood an impressive performance by Champaign right fielder Tony Ward to defeat the Chiefs, 5-3, at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Ward was 3-4 with a home run and 2 singles. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2. Ramón Gómez got the win, improving to 4-3. He worked 8 innings, giving up 3 runs on 7 hits, while striking out 5 and walking 2. José Marino got the save, the 2nd for him this season.
Damian Louganis said the idea of hitting a home run crossed his mind when he came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Louganis belted a 2-run home run to stake Fairfield to a 4-3 lead. His 1st home run of the season came off Champaign pitcher Jim Unknown.
"I'm trying to keep it simple," said Louganis. "Just do my job."
Fairfield has now won 3 straight, while the Chiefs have lost 3 in a row.
