Crowds lined up early in front of Orange Field, eagerly awaiting the start of the 2028 TRIPLE A season. On the mound was Gerardo Vela for the visiting Acapulco Banditos and Katsunan Sato for the hometown Champaign Chiefs. In a spirited contest, the Chiefs pulled out the win, defeating the Banditos by the score of 2-1. Earning player of the game honors was Gerardo Vela. The winner was Katsunan Sato, who threw 98 pitches over 6 innings. The right-hander was charged with 1 run on 4 hits.

Tuo-zhou Zhang helped out the Champaign cause in the bottom of the second inning with a run-scoring ground out. For the game, the shortstop drove in one run.
