Warriors Lose, 7-5, at The Pond
The rain could not dampen the enthusiasm of Nichols fans at The Pond.

The Gnats had to overcome a fine effort from Winfield pitcher Octávio Pérez to grab a narrow 7-5 win at The Pond. Pérez went 6 innings and allowed 2 earned runs. Nichols reliever Valentim Carrapa picked up the win, upping his record to 9-10. Naganori Sakaguchi was saddled with the loss. Katsuyuki Noguchi, summoned from the bullpen, notched his 13th save.

In the bottom of the 7th, left fielder Juan González gave Nichols the lead when he hit a 2-run single. The Gnats had been trailing 4-3, but the two-out single off Winfield pitcher Naganori Sakaguchi changed that -- and Nichols went on to win.

"We'll savor this win," González told the Nichols Daily News, "then get ready for the next game."

The last-place Gnats now have a win-loss record of 52-108.
