Cornhuskers Get 7-5 Win Versus Long Island
The rain came, as predicted, but the DeKalb Cornhuskers and Long Island Ducks were able to complete their ballgame.

Long Island got a terrific game from center fielder Darren Payne. It wasn't enough, though, to prevent the team from falling to DeKalb, 7-5. Payne was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He was 3 for 5 with a triple and a double, while scoring 2 runs. Paul Hicks got the win, improving to 5-16. He worked 5.1 innings, giving up 4 runs on 10 hits, while striking out 4 and walking 4. Kevin Spurr nailed down his 11th save.

Tadao Hirata wielded some clout for DeKalb. The second baseman had a 2-run home run in the top of the fourth for the Cornhuskers. It put his team ahead, 2-0, and sent them on to victory. For the game, Hirata went 2-5 with a home run. He drove in 2 runs and scored once.

"Wish we'd had more wins to celebrate like this one," said Hirata.

The Cornhuskers raised their record to 54-93.
