The Gnats had to overcome a fine effort from Winfield pitcher Pang Ji to grab a narrow 4-3 win at The Barn. Ji went 6 innings and allowed 2 earned runs. Reliever Valentim Carrapa picked up the win. His record improves to 7-8. Lenny Tremlett took the loss. Katsuyuki Noguchi finished the game for Nichols and earned his 7th save.

Nichols took control in the top of the eighth. With one out and a runner on 1st, Taroemon Yamada hit a run-scoring triple to make it 4-3, Gnats.

"Both teams played hard," said Nichols manager Quinn Patrick.

Winfield has now lost 4 straight.
