Fireballs Fall Short, 5-4, at Antioch
|
Antioch beat Joplin at The Coal Mine, eking out a 5-4 win. The win was due in large part to pitcher Jim Unknown, who earned player of the game honors. Antioch reliever Manuel Sánchez picked up the win, bumping his record to 9-4. Abalendu Sourabh was collared with the loss. Javier Franco, summoned from the bullpen, notched his 3rd save.
In the bottom of the 6th, left fielder Manny Durán gave Antioch the lead when he hit a 2-run single. The Coal Miners had been trailing 3-2, but the two-out single off Joplin pitcher Abalendu Sourabh changed that -- and Antioch went on to win.
"We had the game right there for the taking," said Joplin manager Nick Browning. "But we decided not to take it."
The Coal Miners now have a record of 78-66.
