Acres Belts Bunch of Base Hits

5 hits in a game has always been a magic number in baseball. Only a handful of players will do that. Get 5 hits in a game and you get your moment of glory, your fifteen minutes of fame -- you get your name in the record book. Win or lose, you get listed. Mark Acres got his name in the record book, but the Long Island Ducks picked up the win, topping the Spokane Bulldogs 6-3. "Sure, I would have much preferred to win the game, but that's not how it came out. In baseball you win some, lose some and some get rained out," the Spokane center fielder expressed his feelings during the postgame press conference. He certainly did his part today, pounding out hit after hit.

Later in the clubhouse Acres spoke further about his big game. "To hit the ball consistently well, you have to relax. I was relaxed for the first four hits, but I must admit, I got too much adrenaline going when I realized that this was a special once-in-a-lifetime day. On the last hit, I was ready to swing at anything close, I was that excited. That's why my third base coach called time and told me, 'Calm down and wait for a good pitch.' That got me back on track and I nailed the first one in the strike zone." On his record-setting day Acres delivered 5 hits in 5 at-bats, a day that will be good scrapbook material. Mark Acres singled in the 1st, hit a two-run home run off Mark Douglas in the 3rd, singled in the 4th, tripled in the 7th and singled in the 9th.

This year Acres has 4 home runs and a .301 batting average.
