Maruyama and Gato Suspended, Out 5 Games
Sunday, March 31st, 2024
The action was hot and heavy at a recent ORIX-Fukuoka SoftBank game at Sea Hawks Stadium in more ways than one. When tempers flared, both benches emptied and a mild melee ensued. The only thing hurt was a few players' pride. Two of the main figures in the brawl were suspended today by league officials. The Buffaloes Katsuhiko Maruyama and Fukuoka SoftBank's Kiyoemon Gato will each miss 5 games for their roles in the fight.
"We do not condone this kind of behavior on the field," the league announcement read. "As such, we believe that this punishment fits the actions taken by these two players. We hope that there will not be a repeat of the incident or else the consequences will be even more severe."
A look at his current stats shows Maruyama with a .338 average, 2 home runs, 14 RBIs and 9 runs scored. He has played in 19 games.
This season Gato has made 6 relief appearances and has no saves. His record is 1-1 with 10 strikeouts in 6.2 innings with a 4.05 ERA.
