Villanueva Gets 5 Hits
Thursday, May 20th, 2021
5 hits in a game has always been a magic number in baseball. Only a handful of players will do that. Get 5 hits in a game and you get your moment of glory, your fifteen minutes of fame -- you get your name in the record book. Win or lose, you get listed. Marcos Villanueva got his name in the record book, but the Niagara Stars picked up the win, topping the Montreal Royales 16-13. "Sure, I would have much preferred to win the game, but that's not how it came out. In baseball you win some, lose some and some get rained out," the Montreal second baseman expressed his feelings during the postgame press conference. He certainly did his part today, pounding out hit after hit.
Later in the clubhouse Villanueva spoke further about his big game. "To hit the ball consistently well, you have to relax. I was relaxed for the first four hits, but I must admit, I got too much adrenaline going when I realized that this was a special once-in-a-lifetime day. On the last hit, I was ready to swing at anything close, I was that excited. That's why my third base coach called time and told me, 'Calm down and wait for a good pitch.' That got me back on track and I nailed the first one in the strike zone." On his record-setting day Villanueva delivered 5 hits in 5 at-bats, a day that will be good scrapbook material. Marcos Villanueva singled in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, hit an RBI double in the 6th and hit a three-run home run off Ronaldo Pérez in the 8th.
In his stats this season, Villanueva has posted a batting average of .264 with 60 hits in 227 at-bats, 14 home runs and 42 RBIs. He has also scored 47 runs, walked 29 times and compiled a .349 OBP.
