González Strikes out as Florida Manager Wednesday, May 5th, 2021 The fans in Florida have gotten their way -- today the Gators parted company with manager Rubén González. He had been living on borrowed time after a poll of local sports fans found that he was about as popular as the plague. Fans had been increasingly more vocal about their displeasure with how González was running the club on and off the field. They had even created a "Fire González Zone" in the right field bleachers, where fans would post signs and dress in t-shirts supporting his exodus as manager. Asked if fan pressure had any effect on the termination, a Gators official, spoke off the record and said, "Yes, it had a bearing. We are always concerned about our fan base, but this was not the primary reason for the dismissal. In the last few months, things have gone downhill and we just had to do something about it. We decided to get new leadership in the clubhouse." |
