Manager Rubén González Forced out in South Carolina
Saturday, June 4th, 2016
The fans in South Carolina have gotten their way -- today the Gamecocks parted company with manager Rubén González. He had been living on borrowed time after a poll of local sports fans found that he was about as popular as the plague. Fans had been increasingly more vocal about their displeasure with how González was running the club on and off the field. They had even created a "Fire González Zone" in the right field bleachers, where fans would post signs and dress in t-shirts supporting his exodus as manager.
Asked if fan pressure had any effect on the termination, a Gamecocks official, spoke off the record and said, "Yes, it had a bearing. We are always concerned about our fan base, but this was not the primary reason for the dismissal. In the last few months, things have gone downhill and we just had to do something about it. We decided to get new leadership in the clubhouse."
