Amarillo Starting Pitcher Hurt

Melvin Brown at first refused to leave today's El Paso-Amarillo game after he suffered a torn flexor tendon in his elbow while throwing a pitch. But his manager convinced him not to be foolish. "I want to be on the field," the feisty Amarillo starting pitcher said. "I'll play through just about anything." Given time to reflect on the situation, he knew it was in his best interest to get immediate treatment. The injury is expected to keep Brown out of action for 11 months.

Thus far this season, Brown has tossed 75 innings in 15 starts, fanned 68 batters, walked 24 and put up a 4.92 ERA with 3 wins and 4 losses.
