Batting titles are tough to come by. It takes a lot of talent, hard work, consistency, few slumps, good health and a little luck. Phillip Smith of the Las Vegas Jokers put it all together this year and led the Thurman Munson League with a .383 batting average (211-551). The Jokers catcher played in 137 games, ending the season with 35 doubles, no triples, 29 home runs, 107 runs and 118 RBI. "When you work hard, good things happen," Smith explained to reporters after winning the coveted award. "Slumps happen to everyone, but you won't break out of one without hard work. I think that's one of the prime reasons for my success this season." |   |
