Hughes Batters El Paso Big Time
Hughes Batters El Paso Big Time
Friday, August 2nd, 2013: 5 hits in a game has always been a magic number in baseball. Only a handful of players will do that. Get 5 hits in a game and you get your moment of glory... your 5 minutes of fame... you get your name in the record book. Win or lose you get listed.

Ed Hughes got his name in the record book, but the El Paso Diablos picked up the win, topping the Coronado Phantoms 14-13.

"Sure, I would have much preferred to win the game, but that's not how it came out. In baseball you win some, lose some and some get rained out," the Coronado shortstop expressed his feelings during the postgame press conference.

He certainly did his part today, pounding out hit after hit.

Later in the clubhouse Hughes spoke further about his big game, "To hit the ball consistently well, you have to relax. I was relaxed for the first four hits, but I must admit, I got too much adrenaline going when I realized that this was a special once-in-a-lifetime day. On the last hit, I was ready to swing at anything close, I was that excited. That's why my third base coach called time and told me, 'Calm down and wait for a good pitch.' That got me back on track and I nailed the first one in the strike zone."

On his record-setting day Hughes delivered 5 hits in 5 at-bats, a day that will be good scrapbook material.

Ed Hughes walked in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, hit an RBI single in the 6th, hit an RBI single in the 8th and hit an RBI double in the 9th.

During the current season Hughes is batting at a .280 clip with 11 home runs and 52 RBIs. He has played in 108 games and scored 64 times.
